The Tragedy of the Commons

Many people remember this article from 1968 by Garrett Hardin and think that the commons are doomed to tragedy. Hardin himself later said he should have named his article The Tragedy of the Unregulated Commons. Below are the Wikipedia overview, and Hardin's 1968 article. If you search the web, you will find hundreds of entries on this topic, but I chose a few that caught my interest. A call from the Cato Institute to make all of nature private property, a game to play, and an alternative rock band from New Zealand named the "Tragedy of the Commons."

We at the Tapestry of the Commons do not agree with many of the ideas in these articles, but they are here as part of the wider discussion and for historical reasons.
